Construction of a Soil Nail Wall - A Cost-Effective Solution for Slope

Introduction

Soil nail walls are a modern and cost-effective technique used in construction for stabilizing slopes and retaining structures. The method involves installing long, slender steel bars, or nails, into a slope at a slight downward angle, reinforcing the soil and enhancing the slope's stability. In this case study, we will highlight how our team of construction experts used soil nail walls to stabilize a slope in a residential area.

Challenge

Our client, Urban Development Government Institution, faced a challenge when constructing a Multi Level Car Park on a steep slope. The slope required stabilization to prevent soil erosion and protect the new development from slope failure. The traditional construction method of using a retaining wall was not financially viable due to the slope's steepness and the high cost of materials. Additionally with the close proximity of the existing staff car park at the top of the hill, this need to stay in place during the construction phase. There was also a situation with the preservation of a 100 year old tree, deemed high priority for the community of San Fernando.

Solution

Our team proposed using soil nail walls to stabilize the slope and retain the soil. Soil nail walls were a cost-effective solution for this project as the method's materials and construction costs were significantly lower than traditional retaining walls. Additionally, soil nail walls are highly flexible, allowing them to be customized to suit the slope's specific requirements.

Implementation

The implementation phase of the project involved several steps. We first conducted a site analysis to determine the optimal location and design for the soil nail wall. The wall was designed to withstand the force of the slope and retain the soil, protecting the housing development below.

Next, we installed the soil nails into the slope at a slight downward angle. We then inserted steel bars into the drilled holes, grouted them in place, and tensioned them to the specified load capacity. Finally, we installed a reinforced shotcrete facing, providing additional stability and protection for the slope and retaining the soil.

Results

The soil nail wall significantly stabilized the slope, protecting the new housing development from soil erosion and slope failure. The project was completed on time and within the set budget, making it a cost-effective solution for the client. Additionally, soil nail walls are low maintenance, reducing long-term costs associated with slope stabilization.

Conclusion

Soil nail walls are a modern and cost-effective solution for slope stabilization and retaining structures. Our team's successful implementation of the soil nail wall stabilizes the slope and protects existing car park above and the preservation of the 100 year old tree.
